Squatter

Squatter - An Australian Educational Strategy Board Game

Squatter was invented by Bob Lloyd and first published in 1964. It has remained a family favourite for generation after generation and in 2009 we celebrate 45 years of Squatter.

So it is befitting this Aussie classic that we have seen a significant increase in demand from parents and educators in particular who themselves played Squatter as children and who now wish to introduce a new generation to this game about the challenges of farming in a "wide brown land".

Bob was born and raised in Hampton (Vic). After the war Bob worked for a couple of years on a farm called "Coorumbene" in South Gippsland, which ran Merino Sheep. Then in the 1950s Bob took a job as a travelling sales rep for Dalgety's Ltd.

During those years he travelled extensively throughout the rural areas of Victoria and southern New South Wales, and gained valuable knowledge of a wide range of diseases and parasites affecting sheep. Just as importantly, Bob gained insight into the importance of sound management principles in the raising of sheep and other types of livestock.

The experience gained while working on "Coorumbene", together with the diverse experience meeting farmers face to face provided the solid background to develop a educational strategy board game that in every sense simulates real life farming.

Although the basic concept of the game was set down very quickly, it took another six years to finalize the development and convince John Sands Ltd to publish the squatter educational strategy board game.

It was first released at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1962 on the Australian Wool Bureau stand and in 2008 was recognised in the Australian National Museum as an icon of Australian history. In these days of globalisation, Squatter remains proudly Australian.
