5 fun games you can play with your children during holidays without spending all your money

Why can’t we go to Seaworld?

There’s nothing to do.

I’m bored, why can’t we do something?

What can we do today?

How many times have you heard this from your children during the long December / January school break?

Everything is great in the first few weeks with Christmas to get excited about and gifts to shop for but then we pass through Christmas and New Year and it’s 4 more weeks until they go back to school.

You’ve spent all your money on Christmas and now there’s no money to pay for all those fun but expensive theme parks, bowling alleys and the latest blockbuster at the movies.

Try these fun and free games to see out January and welcome back the school year.

Little Explorers
A nature scavenger hunt in the backyard or even a park.  Grab the kids, enough magnifying glasses to go around and a list of creatures and other natural bits and pieces to scavenge.  Some items you might look for are spiders, worms, butterflys, caterpillars, a tree that is losing its bark, a kookaburra and many more. The magnifying glass will come in handy when your child wants an up close and personal look at a caterpillar or lady bug and it’s a great opportunity for learning.

Chef for a day
Let them cook their favourite meal from preparation to serving (with your assistance). Show them how to use the big knife properly, talk to them about the change that happens to an egg as it boils. Take every opportunity to help younger children learn something new and interesting. Kids love to watch a cake or muffins rise through the oven door too so don’t forget the fun of baking.

Hideaway at Home
Remember the fun of building your very own fort or hide-away in the lounge-room when you were growing up and get the kids involved. Build a fort and invite the kids to bring in a small selection of their favourite toys.  Everything looks and feels different from under the sheet-walls of your hide-away.

Board Game Championships
Everyone has at least one or two board games. Pull them out for a day and challenge the kids to a Board Game Championship. Award points for every game win and tally them up at the end of the day. Award the Board Game Champion a special prize of an old recycled trophy that’s been sitting in the basement for years. Alternatively, you can draw, decorate and cut out your own, very special trophy to award.

Don’t have any board games? Get something unique, fun and award winning from Funatical serious fun.

Have fun with the children before they go back to school.

After all, it’s only a few shorts weeks now before you’ll be enjoying the peace and serenity of an empty house between the hours of 9am to 3pm.

After School conversation

Christmas is over and we’ve rung in the New Year. For many parents thoughts are now turning to the new school year.

Let’s reflect for a moment on last year.

How was your conversation with your child as they arrived home from school every day?

Does this sound familiar?

Child bounds through the front door, dropping his school bag and rushing to hide his head in the refrigerator with a mumbled ‘urrghhh’ in response to your ‘what did you do in school today?’.

Most children when asked about their day at school respond with an ‘I forget’. You might think they are being uncommunicative however sometimes, they simply cannot remember.

It’s no surprise that their memory seems maxed out at the end of a day where the focus is on processing and storing different kinds of information.

From the moment you wake him up until you tuck him in at night your child is expected to remember everything from daily routines to the facts he is learning in class.  He needs to know letters and numbers automatically sohe can begin to read, spell, and solve math problems, and he must be able to record his own experiences in writing.

Remembering requires the ability to store information for a few seconds (short-term memory), then for several minutes while manipulating information (active working memory), and finally for an extended period of time (long-term memory). When copying spelling words from the blackboard, your child must first remember the sequence of letters, and then they need to write the words down without spending a lot of time looking back at the board. Some will whisper the words under their breath or repeat the letters out loud to help themselves. Later, they’ll have to memorize the words for a spelling test.

By giving your child opportunities to exercise his memory muscles now, you will be making it easier for him to handle the load of information in school.

Here are a few quick ways to boost your childs brain power before getting into the new school year.

Get the details.
You can have a long-term impact on memory development by including many questions and specifics in conversations about past events with their children. When you talk about a recent trip to the circus, for instance, ask your child, “What was your favorite act?” or “What did the big top look like?” Fill in the details if he can’t provide them.

Play memory games.
In the car, try games like “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m taking . . . ,” in which everyone has a turn adding an item and repeating the ones said previously.

GB00160_1The Brain Box range of memory games from The Green Board Game Co are beautifully illustrated, well researched and pure fun. Not just memory games but endless learning opportunties including geography, general knowledge, Math’s Biology and other sciences for ages 8 +.

GB00168_1

My First Brain Box for ages 4+ is a great game for younger children with no words only fun images to recall. Brain Box is available in Australia at www.funatical.com.au

Suggest strategies.
Look for memory tricks that can help your child. For example, when you teach left and right, have her hold up both hands in the shape of an L. The hand with the forward-facing L is the left one. To help her recall how to read a word with two consecutive vowels, tell her, “When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking.”

Practice, practice, practice.
Offer to quiz your child on her spelling words or multiplication tables. Try repeating the numbers aloud with her to make them easier to recall. After testing her on spelling, have her highlight and rewrite the difficult words. Once your child realizes that memory is an active process, she’ll feel smarter and more confident that she can tackle tricky topics.

And now that you have your child all ready to get back to school here is something else to think about?

How is your memory?

Christmas party games for kids

santaIt’s almost time!

The big guy in the red suit is getting ready to come down the chimney and you’ve taken on the job of hosting the family get together this year.

The food was easy – turkey, ham, seafood and salads. And for dessert it’s traditional Christmas pudding with custard and ice-cream and that old Australian favourite Pavlova loaded with cream and fresh strawberries.

So what have you got organized to keep the kids occupied while the adults eat, drink and be merry?

Here are 5 fun games for the kids (and brave adults) on Christmas day

Christmas Presents Race – Supply wrapping paper and a selection of small gifts. Each child has to wrap the present as quickly as possible. The winner is the first to finish or alternatively, the best wrapped as judged by an adult.

Anyone who believes that men are the equal of women has never seen
a man trying to wrap a Christmas present. Author Unknown

Christmas Trivia – Players will have fun trying to answer questions about Santa’s reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, the Grinch and other children’s favorite holiday interests. You might need to brush up on your Christmas trivia and write a list of questions and answers.

Stocking Stuff Race – For this game, you will need one small stocking for each kid, as well as a large amount of small toys or candy. When you start the clock, each child fills their stocking with as much stuff as they can. At the end of 20 or 30 seconds, say “STOP.” Then, each child will give the bag that they filled to the person on their right.

Christmas Trees – Give each child a sheet of green construction paper.  Each child then holds the piece of construction paper behind their back. Without looking, they then should try to rip the paper into the shape of a Christmas tree. You can also have them add a few small red pieces of paper as ornaments to their trees, still behind their backs. Have everyone vote on which trees are the best looking.

Pin The Nose on RudolphMake a big picture of Rudolph, tape it to a wall. Make red circle noses for each player and write the players name on it. Have the players form a line and blindfold the player who has to pin the nose on Rudolph. The child who places the nose closest to the correct place wins.

Ho Ho Ho and a Merry Christmas to all our customers and friends.

May 2010 be filled with family fun.

Long term quality OR the latest trends?

xmastree

With Christmas just around the corner Mums and Dads, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles everywhere are being overloaded with requests for the latest trend in games, the newest item from a favourite TV show or movie.

Let’s explore what quality stands for when it comes to buying for the kids this Christmas.

Great products are the products that stand on their own merits of quality, not on the merits of TV advertisements and licensed TV shows nor through movie character endorsements.

Great products have the following characteristics.

Quality materials

  • Games are manufactured from Wood
  • Jigsaws (apart from those made of Wood) are manufactured using the highest quality Blue Board
  • Where plastics have been used they are of a premium quality, solid, attractive and hard-wearing (including Vintage Plastic)

Quality craftsmanship

  • Products are manufactured to very high exacting standards. Where products have been manufactured in China, they are at the premium end in terms of process and finishes.

Simplicity of design

  • Products are designed with the aim of reducing unnecessary complications and to make your play as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible. Often the design aspect is not overt but is evident in the “playability” or “useability” of quality games, jigsaws and crafts
  • Only a few rules that are quick and easy to learn so you can be enjoying them within seconds of opening the box

Fast to play

  • Quality games take less than 30 minutes to play and many just 10 or 20 minutes, but they are addictive so you will want to play time and time again

Challenging (not taxing) for your mind

  • Games that have a “classic” feel to them but very often with one or a few unexpected “twists” to make them interesting, entertaining and challenging.

Stimulating and educational for your children (and for you)

  • Core life skills including dexterity, psychomotor, colour recognition, observation and association, memory, numbers and counting, maths, sciences, general knowledge and socialisation.
  • Thinking skills including creativity, problem solving, decision making, resource management, planning and strategy development and lateral thinking.

Products that will stand the test of time

  • Durable products to withstand the rigours of family life and the kind of wear that only toddlers and children can dish out.
  • Classic, elegant, timeless designs so they will look just as stylish tomorrow as they do today.
  • Outstanding craftsmanship so they can be passed on through generations

Great products are the products that are serious FUN for families to enjoy playing and socialising together!

How to find a good quality 3D Lenticular Jigsaw Puzzle

HC97104_4

With Christmas coming up we recently received an email from Sandra in Australia. Sandra has decided to buy her children some 3D Jigsaw puzzles this year and wanted to know where she could buy a good quality puzzle that would last for more than the School holidays.

It’s important when considering your 3D puzzle that you are aware of some problems that you might come across and how to recognise these problems before you spend your money.

The top 3 problems with most 3D Lenticular puzzles

1. Delamination
The ink needs to bond well with the plastic layers creating the lenticular effect. Otherwise the layers separate and distort the image.

2. Image Clarity
Combining 12 layers to produce one image obviously demands precision. Misaligned, the image will look out of focus.

3. Perception of Depth
There is more to creating an illusion of depth than printing technology alone. The image must lend itself well to the lenticular treatment.

HC97104_1We exclusively sell and recommend the Hobbico, Visual Echo range of premium quality 3D Lenticular Jigsaw Puzzles, within Australia.

Visual Echo 3D Jigsaws are manufactured in Poland by Trefl under licence by US-based Hobby company, Hobbico.

Trefl is the market leader in quality European-manufactured jigsaw puzzles as well as games and playing cards. While they produce jigsaws puzzles for all ages and tastes, it is their jigsaws and games for the youngest that are at the heart of what they do. The highly spirited Trefl team takes care that the products are not only attractively designed and safe, but also spur children to develop their imagination, perceptiveness, and the skills of counting and writing.

Trefl frequently consult expert teachers, educators, and psychologists.  Before any game or puzzle reaches the shop, it is thoroughly tested to ensure that the marketed product is of the highest quality in every respect (including your child’s safety) and guarantees great games for a lifetime.

With up to 12 layers images in each 3D puzzle, you just will not believe:

  • The amazing 3D depth and clarity
  • The stunning imagery (and variety)
  • The incredible movement (the imagery actually moves)
  • The quality (These puzzles are so well made you can actually pick-up the completed puzzle – no gluing required)

It’s Australia’s best 3D Jigsaw. Check out the full range on our website and visit Hobbico, Visual Echo at their website

Happy Christmas shopping and family puzzle making over the holidays.

The Audi A3, Microsoft X Box 360 Forza Motorsport and PhotoPearls

Pimp my ride with PhotoPearlsTM

What do Audi, Microsoft X Box 360 and PhotoPearlsTM have in common?

Dan Greenawalt - Lead Game Designer of Forza Motorsport puts the first beads in place!

Dan Greenawalt - Lead Game Designer of Forza Motorsport puts the first beads in place!

To launch their latest game for X-Box360, the long-awaited Forza Motorsport 3, Microsoft has teamed with Audi, also celebrating their 100th year of motoring and little known Swedish company PhotoPearlsTM to ‘Pimp’ a brand new car.

PhotoPearlsTM was recently asked to design and decorate an Audi A3 with a bead mural of the X-Box360 logo and in game designer, Dan Greenawalt’s honour the car’s roof has been decorated in a “manga-style”. A 100 speed sign on the doors points to Audi’s 100 years.

The new X-Box360 Forza Motorsport allows gamers to pimp their own ride with some even selling their hugely popular “manga-style” designs to other players.

Close to 100,000 hollow plastic Photo Pearls beads will be used up per day, glued onto the Audi. In total 370,000 beads are expected to be used for the beaded ride. When the masterpiece is ready it will be displayed at Audi Forum in central Stockholm and then exhibited at the big toy fair in Nuremberg, Germany in February next year.

PhotoPearlsTM is attempting its biggest project yet. It will be bigger than the Obama 50 Schools project where fourth grade students from each U.S. state created a 9 x 11.5 foot photo mosaic of President Obama made entirely of more than 350,000 PhotoPearlsTM hollow plastic beads. It’s the world’s largest beaded photo mosaic. This will now be the world’s largest beaded car and is also the first three-dimensional arts piece proving how multifaceted PhotoPearlsTM is.

Follow along on the video’s below as the car gets pimped with the X-Box360 alongside other artwork including the Audi 100 and the Pink Ribbon.

Microsoft’s “Turn 10 Studios” Game Director, Dan Greenawalt has been watching the progress with interest and has taken a few tips for the ongoing design modifications to his own highly tuned Audi S4 which is also featured in www.Audizine.com .

PhotoPearlsTM is a patented software package that lets you turn digital images, including your own photo’s, into works of art using a range of 30 different coloured beads specifically designed to match the pixel colour palette. You can choose to make your artwork as small or as large as you want, limited only by the number of beads at your disposal and your imagination.

Peter Stambeck, MD, PhotoPearlsTM Sweden will be in Australia next week to meet with the Australian Supplier Funatical Pty Ltd and will be touring retail stores to demonstrate the product.

PhotoPearlsTM will be the
Christmas craze this year
and is the perfect gift for all ages.
